Built Out of Frustration. Perfected Out of Love.

We’re a South Florida family with young children, a backyard garden, and a deep belief that the best life is one lived close to the earth. We grow most of the fruits and vegetables our family eats. We prioritize real, clean food. And a few years ago, we decided to add chickens to the mix.
It started simply enough. Our kids had always loved being outdoors, and the idea of them interacting with animals collecting eggs in the morning, learning where food actually comes from felt like exactly the kind of childhood experience worth creating. So we bought a coop. Then another one. Then another.

Three Coops in Five Years

Here’s the honest truth: we went through three different backyard coop systems in five years. Some of them looked great in the photos online. A few of them even looked decent in our backyard for a while. But Florida is not a forgiving environment for outdoor structures. The humidity, the heat, the rain, the UV exposure it takes a real toll. And coop after coop, we found ourselves trashing and replacing what should have been a permanent part of our backyard.
After the third one, we’d had enough.

Building It the Right Way

Our family is fortunate to have decades of construction expertise to draw from. So instead of buying a fourth coop, we decided to build one the right way, using real construction methods and the most durable materials available. Not furniture carpentry. Not a flat-pack kit. A permanent outdoor structure, engineered for the specific demands of Florida’s climate.
It took a few iterations to get it exactly right. But we got there. And when we did, we had something that not only performed like a real structure but looked genuinely beautiful in our backyard. Durable, functional, and something we’re actually proud to have back there.
That coop became the foundation for Florida Chicken Coops.

What Chickens Have Given Our Family

We’ll be honest we didn’t fully anticipate what chickens would bring to our family beyond the eggs.
The eggs alone have been a revelation. Every morning we collect fresh eggs that are simply in a different category from anything you can buy at a grocery store. The yolks are richer, the flavor is better, and there’s something deeply satisfying about knowing exactly where your food comes from and how it was raised.
But beyond the food, the chickens have genuinely brought us closer together as a family. Our kids adore them. Watching a flock wander around the backyard on a quiet afternoon is one of the most unexpectedly relaxing things we’ve discovered. There’s a calm to it that’s hard to explain until you’ve experienced it.
And in a world that feels increasingly unpredictable, there’s also a quiet peace of mind in knowing that our family has an independent, sustainable source of food one that doesn’t depend on a global supply chain functioning perfectly on any given week.

Why We Do This

We built Florida Chicken Coops because we wanted other families to have what we have without the frustration we went through to get there. You shouldn’t have to buy three coops to end up with one good one. You shouldn’t have to compromise between something that looks great and something that actually lasts.
Our coop is both. And it’s built to stay in your backyard for decades, not seasons.
We are genuinely thrilled to share this with other Florida families and we can’t wait to hear about the mornings your kids spend collecting eggs, the afternoons you spend watching your flock, and the fresh omelets that follow.
Welcome to the flock.
