Florida has the climate the rest of the country doesn't fully understand. Sustained 90° heat for six months a year. Coastal humidity that doesn't quit. Termites that find anything untreated. Hurricane-force winds that test every fastener you didn't tighten.

A chicken coop designed in Pennsylvania or the Carolinas isn't designed for any of that. Ours is designed for nothing else.

Foundation lumber — UC4A/UC4B pressure-treated

The highest ground-contact rating available for high-moisture environments. Every coop is built from lumber engineered specifically to survive direct exposure to wet Florida soil for decades. Standard pressure-treated lumber isn't rated for this — ours is.

Cedar and cypress board and trim

Naturally resistant to rot, moisture, and insects — the only wood species that belong on an outdoor structure built to last through Florida humidity. We don't paint over inferior lumber and call it premium. The wood itself has to perform.

Elevated rot-resistant base

Every coop sits on heavy 4×4 runners, lifted off the ground. Moisture can't wick up into the frame. The structure stays dry, the build stays sound, and the lifespan multiplies. Ground contact is the primary point of failure on most outdoor structures in Florida — we eliminate it.

Simpson Strong-Tie hurricane connectors

Galvanized engineered roof-to-wall connectors that meet hurricane-rated structural standards. The roof stays where it belongs when Florida weather gets serious. Every rafter is tied — not just nailed — to the wall below it, the same way residential roofs are built in high-wind zones.

Insulated Metal Roofing

Reflects radiant heat. Withstands wind. Outlasts every shingle or wood roof on the market in a Florida climate. The insulation layer reduces heat transfer into the coop — a meaningful difference for flock health during the summer months when ambient temperatures stay above 90° for weeks at a time.

Galvanized-after-welding (GAW) hardware cloth

Standard galvanized wire leaves raw, unprotected metal at every weld point — the first place corrosion starts. GAW hardware cloth is dip-coated as a finished product, sealing every joint, seam, and cut edge against Florida's wet, salty air. This is the difference between mesh that lasts six years and mesh that lasts twenty.

Stainless steel and hot-dipped galvanized hardware

Every hinge, latch, and fastener is specified for coastal and high-humidity environments. Nothing on the structure will rust, seize, or fail. Standard hardware store hinges are not coastal-rated. In Florida, that distinction shows up within the first two years.

Ground Anchoring System

Every coop is anchored to the ground as part of the installation — not simply set in place. It's a structure, not a piece of furniture. The anchoring system is designed to resist uplift and lateral movement in high-wind events, including the kind of gusts that arrive without warning during Florida storm season.

Copper naphthenate cut-end sealing

When lumber is cut, the exposed end becomes the most vulnerable point on the entire board — the place moisture, rot, and fungal decay begin. We seal every cut end with copper naphthenate preservative before it goes into the structure. It's a slower way to build. It's the only way to build something that lasts.

Simpson Strong-Tie and GRK RSS structural screws

Engineered to the highest industry standards — corrosion-resistant coatings, self-countersinking heads, and exceptional shear and withdrawal strength. Standard screws strip, corrode, and fail. Ours don't. In a structure designed to survive twenty-plus years in Florida's climate, the fasteners have to match the ambition of the rest of the build.

Why It Matters

A coop should outlast the flock that lives in it.

A backyard hen lives 6–10 years. A budget chicken coop, in Florida, lasts about three.

When you buy a Florida Chicken Coop, you're buying a structure that will house generations of flocks — not the first one and then a replacement coop five years later. The materials cost more.
